Flexible working and benefits

Your maternity leave will end within 12 months of your baby’s birth. Ask your employer about flexible working and try out your childcare before you start back.

Many working families are not claiming money to which they are entitled. There is often help available towards childcare costs. Claim any help with costs from tax credits or childcare vouchers from your employer if they provide them. Or you could request a benefit entitlement check at the council’s Welfare Rights service or at Salford CAB to make sure you are accessing all your entitlements.

Finding childcare

Don’t let childcare be a barrier to taking up employment or training. If you’re a parent or carer in Salford, you can get help and advice from the Starting Well information service. You can search online for registered childcare in Salford. Local provision includes day nurseries, child-minders, pre-school playgroups and out of school clubs. If you can't find what you are looking for, you can call them on 0161 909 6508 as they may have more up-to-date information.

Free childcare

All three and four year olds are entitled to 15 hours free early education and childcare from the term after their third birthday. Some two year-olds in Salford are also currently entitled to free childcare if you meet certain criteria. Contact the Starting Life Well service to find out more.

Childcare for student parents

If you are still in further or higher education or training, there may be help with the costs of childcare. If you are still at school or sixth form college and are under 20, you may be entitled to £160 per week towards childcare through the Care to Learn scheme.

Single parents

If you are a lone parent who is out of work or looking to change career, you may be able to access support through the Salford Foundation’s Cascade project. If you live in particular neighbourhoods and fit the criteria, you will be able to make use of the free crèche while you attend tailored workshops on themes such as goal setting, self-confidence, application forms, CVs, and interview skills.
